Red, Black and Gold: We don’t hear much about Belgium here in Hong Kong. But perhaps that’s about to change. El Grande Concepts has just launched Belgos, a Belgian bar and restaurant in the heart of Causeway Bay.
Look & Feel: Expect modern style with plenty of surrealism. The decor is heavily inspired by Belgian surrealist artist Magritte, and it shows. Magritte’s witty works adorn the walls, while other quirky elements – think sky montages and umbrellas hanging from the ceiling – pop up here and there. Belgian cartoon adventurer Tin Tin also features among the art – as does the Manneken Pis, that iconic – if naughty, and largely underwhelming – 17th century sculpture in central Brussels.
On the Menu: If you’ve no idea what Belgian cuisine means – well, you wouldn’t be the first. But at Belgos, you’ll find contemporary spins on classic Belgian favourites. Think moules frites (mussels and fries), carbonnade flamande, waterloo, and waffles. For a bit of fun, a few dishes have been given Asian twists – think “Moules Thailandaises” – Belgian mussels in Tom Yum Goong and yellow curry. There are also more than 30 Belgian beers on offer.
Great For: Casual catch-ups and Belgian beers.
